The former Alaska governor will visit Hong Kong to address the CLSA Investors Forum, a well-known annual conference of global investment managers, the host announced Monday.A statement from CLSA spokeswoman Simone Wheeler read, in part:
Bill Clinton, Al Gore and Alan Greenspan have spoken at the event, hosted by brokerage and investment group CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets.
"We just felt it would be a fabulous opportunity for CLSA clients to hear from Mrs. Palin," Wheeler said, adding that CLSA approached Palin with the offer.Excuse us, AP, but we will have to wait for confirmation from Gov. Palin or someone authorized to speak for her before we take this one to the bank. You know how optimistic some event organizers can be.
She said the conference aimed to present investors "a diversity of views that potentially influence decision-makers who help shape the markets."
The Sept. 23 address will mark Palin's first commercial speaking engagement, according to CLSA. Her speaking fees were not disclosed.
It will be closed to the media, and the topic has not yet been confirmed.
"It’s confirmed. She will be a speaker at our forum."Still, we will have to wait for Sarah's people to confirm or deny, which they tend to do only when contacted and asked directly about a specific event. "Getting out front" on a story doesn't appear to be a high priority for the Palin organization. As they say, watch this space...
U.S. Senator John McCain, a torture survivor from his days as a captive during the Vietnam War, says his private comments about harsh interrogation methods were misrepresented by the Bush Administration in a recently released legal document intended to justify a six-day-long course of sleep deprivation for one CIA detainee in November of 2007.
SWINE flu has been discovered in birds, prompting fears that a more dangerous and easily transmitted strain will emerge.
Health experts last night confirmed that the H1N1 pig flu virus has infected turkeys. It is the first case of H1N1 in birds.
Scientists warned the outbreak in poultry could lead to a deadly flu outbreak if it mixes with lethal avian flu.
Tests have shown sick turkeys at two farms in Chile were struck down with the swine flu virus that has caused a pandemic in humans.
Britain’s leading flu expert, Professor John Oxford, said: “The last thing we want is a universal virus that goes everywhere.

I don't know what type of crystal meth you're on, but this has got to be the biggest distortion of anything I've ever written in my life. But let me just make two points and then you can go oil up your shotgun: 1) In the Fox interview with Bristol, the Governor comes in and AGREES with her daughter about abstinence. There's your 'Mommy Dearest' moment.I don't make this stuff up. 2) I just saw the Ann Coulter interview where she says that Bristol should put her child "UP FOR ADOPTION." Where's the Governor's response to THAT? Where's your response to THAT? Dude, the silence is deafening. I have three beautiful children so I certainly don't need anymore. Stay on the road with that new truck of yours. I don't think you can handle the off-the-road terrain.

The United States is poised to dump a critical missile-defense agreement with two of its most dependable NATO allies. The Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza reported yesterday that the Obama administration is going to scrap the "third site" anti-missile system scheduled to be deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic. Missile interceptors in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic were scheduled to be deployed by 2013. Now the plan appears to have been shot down.

Though a little scandal might alienate advertisers, it’s pure ratings gold. Last night Glenn Beck had over 3 million viewers at 5pm, second only to O’Reilly for the night. But, Beck had more 25-54 viewers than O’Reilly (888K to 876K). I don’t watch or really even care about the cable news wars, but still…wow. Even though Beck airs before primetime, when there are fewer people watching TV, he had the most 25-54 viewers in the cable news world for the night.

Were Hillary Clinton the great rural white savior that her campaign is depicting, she would have had this thing wrapped up in, say, Iowa, or a couple of weeks after that. Her inability to dispatch a presidential neophyte such as Barack Obama in a Democratic primary is precisely because, after alienating African-American voters beyond her comprehension, she wasn't able to convince white voters in places from Virginia to Idaho that she could be trusted to lead the country.

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Senate tour of Alaska's climate change hot spots has been postponed so that senators may attend the funeral of their Democratic colleague, Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts.
"Ted Kennedy's dream of quality health care for all Americans will be made real this year because of his leadership and his inspiration," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a statement.
The most revealing portion of the IG report documents the program's results. The CIA's "detention and interrogation of terrorists has provided intelligence that has enabled the identification and apprehension of other terrorists and warned of terrorist plots planned for the United States and around the world." That included the identification of Jose Padilla and Binyam Muhammed, who planned to detonate a dirty bomb, and the arrest of previously unknown members of an al Qaeda cell in Karachi, Pakistan, designated to pilot an aircraft attack in the U.S. The information also made the CIA aware of plots to attack the U.S. consulate in Karachi, hijack aircraft to fly into Heathrow, loosen track spikes to derail a U.S. train, blow up U.S. gas stations, fly an airplane into a California building, and cut the lines of suspension bridges in New York.
A poll of 300 voters each in Kilpatrick's and Conyers' congressional districts shows that only 27% of the people polled would vote for Kilpatrick. Conyers' numbers are stronger with 40% of the people polled saying they would vote for him.
Women by an 18-point margin are opposed to housing the inmates at Standish.
Seventy percent (70%) of Republicans and 55% of voters not affiliated with either party are against it.
There is a lot happening behind the scenes. Some of which I do know, and much I do not know. But before I go forward with another bombshell I am going to make damn sure backup is only a day or so away.
I will leave you with the wise words of my friend Shannyn Moore, who leaned over to me in the middle of my very bad week and said, "If you were not over the target, you would not be receiving so much flak".
[Update August 2009: Unfortunately my prediction came true about there being a flu pandemic this fall and winter. I made that prediction back in January based on astrological, synchronistic, and political factors, and wrote this research note in early March. The swine flu hit the news in April. I am leaving most of this article alone for posterity, except I have improved the section below on dietary changes and boosting the immune system].
Chances are high that there will be a flu pandemic within a year, especially during fall and winter of 2009. Pandemics are worse than epidemics, affecting more people over greater areas (like global or continental).
There are astrological, metaphysical, physical, and political factors indicating that a flu pandemic is likely soon, and why it’s more important than ever to build up your immune system.
Usually I am not a fan of the celebrity gossip either, but in Palin's case I feel it is important to keep tabs on what is happening because she still has the ability to energize a very nutty wing of the conservative party.
And by the way they are the target audience for these tabloids. (I mean look, it outs Oprah as a lesbian and talks about NASCAR. How is that not Sarah Palin's demographic?)

“…Try this on for size: Palinism. What is it? It is an updated version of McCarthyism, which takes its name from the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin liar, demagogue and drunk, and means, according to Wikipedia, "reckless, unsubstantiated accusations, as well as demagogic attacks on the character or patriotism of political adversaries." As far as we know, Sarah Palin is not a drunk.”
“…Yet, you can beat the bushes to a fine powder and find only two Republicans of note -- Sens. Johnny Isakson and Lisa Murkowski -- who had the courage or the decency to tell Palin that she doesn't know what she's talking about.”
“…But some in the audience said the government was taking far too much of a bite at once with such a huge overhaul. Others said that the plan smacked of socialism and that's not the kind of country they wanted to live in.”
Demagogue Obama: The Recipe
by The Smoldering Crone
Mon Jan 28, 2008 at 12:20:43 PM PDT
Demagogue: A person, especially and orator or a politician, who gains power and popularity by arousing the emotions, passions, and prejudices of the people.
• The Smoldering Crone's diary :: ::
• The fictional Elmer Gantry set the gold standard, and history is dotted with them. Barak Obama is joining their ranks. The recipe is as simple as boiling water. But the longer term impact could be devastating.
1. Take one population that is extremely dissatisfied and unhappy with the status quo.
2. Remind them every time you speak how bad everything is wrong and must be changed.
3. Promise to heal these existing ills.
4. Sprinkle as lightly as possible any detail as to what that the solutions might be or how to go about making change happen. That will spoil the whole recipe.
5. Leave plenty of time for the population to fill in all of the gaps for themselves, making it appear that whatever changes will be made are the same ones that each individual wants. That way everyone will be under the illusion that you want what they want.
6. Serve generously, with lots of dressing, at every opportunity.
This dish is often eaten up readily by the young, but it is astounding how many more mature individuals seem to like it.
Note: This recipe contains no meat
“…WASHINGTON — Jesus is black. Merging Marxism with Christian Gospel may show the way to a better tomorrow. The white church in America is the Antichrist because it supported slavery and segregation.
Those are some of the more provocative doctrines that animate the theology at the core of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Barack Obama's church.
Obama's speech Tuesday on race in America was hailed as a masterful handling of the controversy over divisive sermons by the longtime pastor of Trinity United, the recently retired Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.
But in repudiating and putting in context Wright's inflammatory lines about whites and U.S. foreign policy, the Democratic presidential front-runner didn't address other potentially controversial facts about his church and its ties.”
Exceptional Americanism
George Shulman has written a brilliant book that is at once both classic and timely. While offering new and undoubtedly enduring insights on American politics, political rhetoric, and democratic theory, Shulman also ably embraces one of the most enduring tasks of political theory: explaining the polity to herself. At a time when the election of America’s first black president has produced thousands of column inches, blog posts, and hours of cable-news punditry on the emergence of a supposedly ‘post-racial’ America, Shulman ably reminds us of both the persistence and costs of the trope of racially neutrality in American politics. It is, however, not only what Shulman does in American Prophecy that marks it out as an essential read for scholars of American politics and culture – regardless of their disciplines – but also the way in which he does it. One of Shulman’s central claims about prophetic criticism is that, contrary to the dominant understandings of the genre, it can open up and invigorate democratic debate in a way that brings life to the public sphere. In this sense, perhaps, Shulman’s measured tone, careful arguments, and provocative rereadings of key figures in the history of American thought, along with his compelling case for the inclusion of Toni Morrison within that canon, ultimately serve to make American Prophecy an example of the thing that it studies.
“…Today's Wall Street Journal contains some puzzling news for all Americans who are impacted by high energy prices and who share the goal of moving us toward energy independence.
For years, states rich with an abundance of oil and natural gas have been begging Washington, DC politicians for the right to develop their own natural resources on federal lands and off shore. Such development would mean good paying jobs here in the United States (with health benefits) and the resulting royalties and taxes would provide money for federal coffers that would potentially off-set the need for higher income taxes, reduce the federal debt and deficits, or even help fund a trillion dollar health care plan if one were so inclined to support such a plan.
So why is it that during these tough times, when we have great needs at home, the Obama White House is prepared to send more than two billion of your hard-earned tax dollars to Brazil so that the nation's state-owned oil company, Petrobras, can drill off shore and create jobs developing its own resources? That's all Americans want; but such rational energy development has been continually thwarted by rabid environmentalists, faceless bureaucrats and a seemingly endless parade of lawsuits aimed at shutting down new energy projects.”

"…Just one trade from Warren Buffett, the legendary oracle of Omaha; George Soros, the hedge fund speculator; or Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz al Saud, the Saudi prince reckoned to be the richest man outside America, is, in the words of the Old Testament prophets, 'a sign'.
To understand the market is to follow the prophets, but their power is such that many of their movements are shrouded in secrecy. In the United States, share transaction announcements are delayed for up to six months because they spark mania bordering on anarchy.
But with currency speculation, impact is instantaneous. When on 28 June, Soros said the US dollar could fall 30 per cent by the end of the year, the dollar immediately collapsed to near parity with the euro. Soros's spokesman refused to say whether the fund operating in his name, Quantum, bet prior on a downward movement, but it's possible. Mind you, in subsequent weeks the dollar has clawed back losses. For Soros's sake, let's hope he 'covered his shorts'.

Berkshire Profit Climbs on Buffett’s Bet Against Dollar
We made one large sale last year. In 2002 and 2003 Berkshire bought 1.3% of PetroChina for $488 million, a price that valued the entire business at about $37 billion. Charlie and I then felt that the company was worth about $100 billion. By 2007, two factors had materially increased its value; the price of oil had climbed significantly, and PetroChina's management had done a great job in building oil and gas reserves. In the second half of last year, the market value of the company rose to $275 billion, about what we thought it was worth compared to other giant oil companies. So we sold our holdings for $4 billion. A footnote: We paid the IRS tax of $1.2 billion on our PetroChina gain. This sum paid all costs of the U.S. government - defense, social security, you name it - for about four hours.
FYI: Barack Obama's top supporter George Soros is heavily invested in Brazilian oil- Petrobras. Soros made a major purchase last week before the news broke that the US would invest in the Brazilian oil company.

Although administration officials are eager to deny it, rationing health care is central to President Barack Obama’s health plan. The Obama strategy is to reduce health costs by rationing the services that we and future generations of patients will receive.
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has reported receiving more than a dozen gifts last year, including a gun case, a glass elephant and a statue of the Virgin Mary. But wait, Arctic Cat is such an important part of the military-industrial complex, there must be something nefarious there. Have no fear, Bloggers Hatin' For Satan will surely get to the bottom of this. And even if they don't, they will make something up.
In a filing Monday with the Alaska Public Offices Commission by her attorney, Thomas V. Van Flein, Palin listed 15 gifts worth more than $250. Under state law, the former Republican governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate is not required to disclose the many gifts that she received — often at political events — that are appraised at less than $250.
[...]
Other gifts included a goatskin-bound Bible, an embroidered cross-stitched blanket, a hand-painted plate featuring Palin, two handmade Army flags and assorted jewelry.
[...]
The filing does not list any gifts that she or her husband, Todd, might have received from his snow machine sponsorship with Arctic Cat because of a confidentiality clause in his contract with the company.
[...]
But the attorney said the nature of the contract is such that the company only pays sponsorship fees for races, outfits the team with "Team Arctic Wear" and gives Todd Palin and his teammates a 50 percent discount on merchandise.
"Gov. Palin has no direct contact or communication with Arctic Cat," Van Flein said. "She has not read, and under the terms of the contract is not entitled to read, the specific sponsorship provisions, but she is generally aware that Todd Palin is entitled to the discounts and fee as part of being a sponsored team."
U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski said she will hold a town hall meeting on health care in Anchorage from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Dimond High School. With a push from the administration of President Barack Obama, Congress is debating different ways to get health insurance coverage to the millions of Americans who lack such coverage. The issue has triggered vigorous debate about the need for such coverage, who should provide it, the cost and the reach of federal government.
Advisers urged the Government to offer paracetamol to the public instead of Tamiflu, to stop the virus gaining resistance to the drug.
But the Department of Health advisers said ministers ignored their advice, even when it became clear the outbreak was mild.
It is starting to look as if Governor Charlie Crist’s highly-touted popularity with Floridians has eroded to a level that would have been considered inconceivable not too long ago. Over the past several months, Governor Crist has been convincingly defeated in statewide Republican Executive Committee (REC) straw polls by his primary opponent, Former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, Marco Rubio.

"PUBLIC OPTION" BY ANY OTHER NAME IS STILL GOVERNMENT-RUN HEALTH CARE
Sen. Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) Says Co-Ops Another Form Of Government-Run Health Care. "'We're going to have some type of public option, call it "co-op," call it what you want,' Reid said, adding that Democrats are working on 'some version of a co-op that may satisfy everyone.'" (Trish Turner, "Reid Says Co-Ops Might Be Public Option," Fox News's "The Speaker's Lobby" Blog, 7/9/09)
Open To Co-Ops, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) Doesn't Care What Government-Run Health Care Is Called. "'We don't care what it's called. We need something that's going to keep the insurance companies honest,' Schumer said, adding that any co-op plan must also 'be available right at the beginning, have competition ... and have the strength to bargain.'" (Trish Turner, "Reid Says Co-Ops Might Be Public Option," Fox News's "The Speaker's Lobby" Blog, 7/9/09)
SO WHAT IS A "CO-OP"?
Co-Ops Would Be Funded By Federal Government. "Senator Kent Conrad, a Democrat, proposed creating nonprofit, member-operated health cooperatives to compete with insurers ... The government would offer start-up money -- Conrad said $6 billion would be needed -- in loans and grants to help doctors, hospitals, businesses and other groups form nonprofit cooperative networks to obtain and provide healthcare." ("Q&A - Co-Ops In Focus In U.S. Health Care Debate," Reuters, 7/30/09)
Co-Ops Would Be Regulated By Federal Government. "Advisory board makes recommendations to HHS Secretary who makes final decisions about approvals of business plans ... Business plans must meet governance standards, and eligible applicants must meet the standard for non-profit, participating mutual insurance." ("Senate Finance Committee Draft Proposal," 6/19/09)
Co-Ops Would Force Individuals Who Want To Join To Go Through State Governments. "Co-op membership would be offered through state insurance exchanges where small businesses and individuals without employer-sponsored plans would shop for health coverage." ("Q&A - Co-Ops In Focus In U.S. Health Care Debate," Reuters, 7/30/09)
Federal Government Would Use Co-Ops To Monopolize Health Insurance. "[T]hese co-ops sound a lot like a health-care Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which Congress created because there was supposedly no secondary mortgage market. The duo proceeded to use their government subsidy to dominate the market and drive out private competitors." (Editorial, "Fannie Med," The Wall Street Journal, 7/30/09)
WHY WHITE HOUSE IS FAKING CENTER-RIGHT
White House Open Up To Co-Ops To Fool Dem Senators Into Government-Run Health Care Compromise. NBC'S CHUCK TODD: "This is about getting folks like Ben Nelson in Nebraska; Joe Lieberman in Connecticut; Blanche Lincoln, Mark Pryor of Arkansas -- getting them on board. And a full-fledged public option was making them hesitant. Co-op will be the option that probably gets them done. And that's why the White House is allowing themselves wiggle room." (NBC's "Nightly News," 8/16/09)
House Dems Admit Co-Ops Being Used In Desperate Attempt To Pass Government-Run Health Care Through Senate. "A top House Democratic aide: 'This is just for the Senate. There is no way it passes the House the first time around without a public option. The liberals (around 100+) won't allow it. It if comes back from conference committee without public option and there is the right pitch that it is this or nothing, then it may pass the House.'" (Mike Allen, Politico's "Pulse," 8/17/09)
The big question for President Barack Obama right now isn't about health care, but his own political survival.
It is assumed she will be running for president on the redneck ticket. But as we saw last week, she does not need any office to get results. For after many nice legislators had condemned her for her "unreasonable" criticisms, the U.S. Senate finance committee this week dropped a key provision to which she had referred, from the House health-care bill before them. According to the ranking Republican member, it was dropped "because it could be misinterpreted or implemented incorrectly."
That's a very nice way of saying that Sarah Palin had a point. And it is a point that would have passed unnoticed, had she confined herself to "nice" language.
"...was rumored to have been spotted roaming the White House in a stupor late last night searching for his faux-Greecian, paper mache columns cursing, my kingdom for a Facebook account! Woe is me, oh woe...."Riehl says "one fast ball over the plate from Sarah Palin" and the mighty Sox Fan has fanned. Dan goes on to paraphrase Shakespeare, but we were inspired to have our way with some lines from Thayer:
Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;- JP
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy at Mudflats — mighty Barack has struck out.
"I have temporarily lost interest in Griffin and have now taken a sudden and keen interest in Julia O'Malley and her editors at the Anchorage Daily News."There's a lot of low-hanging rotten fruit on that tree, Stacy. Just go to any pro-Palin blog, search for ADN or Anchorage Daily News and hold your nose. It's a fish wrapper which really stinks, and the stench doesn't come from the fish.

SEATTLE — The country’s first cases of drug-resistant swine flu were discovered in two leukemia patients in Seattle, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday.
The only problem with this idea is that the swine flu vaccination itself has been linked to a deadly condition known as Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This brain disorder can lead to paralysis and even death in some cases. A recent letter from the Health Protection Agency details the concerns that hundreds of neurologists have with the vaccine. Only a few decades ago, in 1976, there was an outbreak of swine flu. A vaccination was used to combat that outbreak; however, over 500 cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome were reported. More people died from taking the vaccine than those who died from the actual swine flu. In addition, the U.S. government had to pay millions of dollars to the victims and their families. The vaccine was pulled after about a week and a half of use after so many problems were reported.

I join millions of Americans in expressing appreciation for the Senate Finance Committee’s decision to remove the provision in the pending health care bill that authorizes end-of-life consultations (Section 1233 of HR 3200). It’s gratifying that the voice of the people is getting through to Congress; however, that provision was not the only disturbing detail in this legislation; it was just one of the more obvious ones.
Michele Bachmann is tossing around a new verb: "Palinize."
In the subject line of a fundraising pitch, Bachmann sends out a plea for money saying, "Don't let them Palinize me!"
Bachmann goes on to explain that Sarah Palin has been demonized by the left, and she quotes Sean Hannity saying she is now the "second-most-hated Republican woman" after Palin.
"With Gov. Palin taking a well-deserved step out of the spotlight, it appears that I may be absorbing even more of the liberals' scorn," Bachmann said.
But the Minnesota Republican also seems worried, as she warns that Democrats are raising "$30,000 a week" to defeat her.
Bachmann even drops in the urban dictionary definition of Palinize:
Palinize:
To smear or mock someone using falsehoods, baseless accusations or unsubstantiated character assassinations for the purpose of blocking them from achieving a goal.
To exaggerate the truth or lie by omission.
And here is a helpful tip. Sarah Palin is a compulsive liar. If she tells you something, you can bet the farm that the opposite is in fact true.
Trust me, I would know.
The number of people filing for unemployment last week rose slightly more than expected to 558,000, another reminder that despite other indications of improvement in the economy, the job market remains weak.
WASHINGTON -- U.S. retail sales unexpectedly fell in July despite the debut of the government's "cash for clunkers" program meant to jump-start the auto business and help turn around the economy.
Wal-Mart's same-store sales dropped 1.2%, when the retailer had projected a flat to up 3% showing. The figures reinforce the fact that retailers are not recovering as quickly as other areas of the economy.
Wal-Mart also adopted a conservative outlook for the third quarter, seeing same-store sales flat to up 2%.
The number of U.S. properties for which a foreclosure filing was received hit its third record in five months as they jumped 32% in July from a year earlier and rose 7% from June, according to online foreclosure concern RealtyTrac.
Chief Executive James Saccacio said that despite continued federal- and state-government efforts to put together a safety net for distressed homeowners, "we're seeing significant growth in both the initial notices of default and in the bank reposessions."
For the 31st straight month, Nevada topped the nation's foreclosure rate list, with one in every 56 housing units getting a foreclosure filing in July. RealtyTrac said that was more than six times the national average. Initial default notices in the state fell 18% from June, which RealtyTrac said was likely the result of a new state law requiring lenders to offer mediation to homeowners facing foreclosure.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Median home prices fell a record 15.6% during the three months ended June 30, compared to the same period in 2008, according to an industry report.
There is good news though: The survey from the National Association of Realtors reported the median home price rose 4% compared to the first quarter of 2009 -- to $174,100 from $167,300.
