Search for cause of Smolensk disaster continues

It seems there may have been a problem with the beacon....

The paper speculates this might have led to the pilot’s misinterpretation of the actual flight level, which caused the tragic accident of the Polish presidential plane on April 10th. Typically, such beacons are placed 1 and 4 kilometers from the start of the landing strip. This is only partially true at Smolensk, because their location on one side of the airport is 1 and 6 kilometers, respectively. This could certainly explain why on the fatal day the plane had descended to barely a few meters above ground level almost one and a half kilometers short of the runway. Three days earlier the same pilot, flying the same machine, with the Polish PM on board approached from the other side where the beacons are at standard distance. His personal experience coupled with lack of information on the difference between the two approach routes and extreme conditions of dense fog could have brought the tragic effects, is the attempted conclusion.

More Analysis on Video at the Smolensk Crash Site

I finally had some time to sit down and look at the video of the crash site at Smolensk and take a careful look at the video with the gunshots.

There has been a significant amount of interest on the video and the one point of interest is a white image of what looks to be a person in white lying down and waving...

Here is what I came up with.

Screen shot at 37 sec.

Screen shot at 39 sec.

Screen shot at 41 sec.

The angle of the video and it changing, looks to have produced what seems to be a waving arm.

The other area pointed to below the white image; it may be the legs of a victim.

Enhanced Video of Crash Site at Smolensk

Aside from the dramatic music and editorializing about survivors being shot, the enhancement at the begining and the black and white footage at the end will show the person laying on the ground in white, moving their arms.

The original video has Poles and Russians speaking and the gun shots heard in the orginal video, are likely warning shots. It could very well be Polish journalists who were going to the site to witness and film the wreckage.

Interestingly, according the Polish government, the Polish press waiting at Smolensk for the President to arrive, were ordered to give their cameras and cell phones to the Russian authorities after the crash.

Photos of Smolensk Air Base: Aircraft Approximately 40 Meters Left of Radio Beacon and Approach Lights

A montage of photos of approach to the runway.

Zone 1 is the first tree that was hit by the president's plane. The tree top is estimated to be 8 meters tall.

The president's plane is approximately 40 meters left of and 1.2 km from the centerline and end of runway.

Zone 2 is the radio beacon.

Zone 5 is the first set of lights on approach that line up to the centerline of the runway.

Radio beacon.

First lights on approach.

Didn't the Left have Coffee Party to go to?

I have to ask, didn't the Left have a Coffee Party to go to?

Because it seems many people on the Left were at a Tea Party rally and trying to disrupt one.

Montage of Photos of Plane Crash at Smolensk Air Base

Alleged Photos from Approach End of Smolensk Air Base

I have to ask if this photo is indeed authentic, then it looks like someone put new lights out just in time for the landing of the Polish president.

The other photo that I have is three set of lights on top of poles that seem to be old and rusted.

Video of Smolensk Crash: Small Arms Round Discharge

You can hear small arms discharge 4 times. It may be because of fire and heat but at the 1:08-1:10 you can hear laughter between the rounds going off.

What is interesting is the visibility even with the smoke. I have to ask how bad was the fog and visibility? The visibility looks to be maybe a half mile with a partially obscured sky.

Was the Tragedy in Russia an Accident?

What I found of interest.

Some 1.5 kilometres (one mile) from the airport, air traffic controllers noticed the Tupolev -- overhauled in December 2009, according to manufacturers Aviakor -- was below its appropriate glide path, Alyoshin said.

"The head of the (air traffic control) group ordered the crew to return to horizontal flight, and when the crew did not fulfil the instruction, ordered them several times to land at another airport," he said.

"Nonetheless the crew continued to descend. Unfortunately this ended tragically."

Two things happened. Either the info on the glide path from ATC was never recieved by the pilots or it was relayed too late.

In either case it will never be proven that there was an intent on the part of the ATC to not properly notify the aircraft..

I do find it odd that the plane was hitting tree tops that stood 8 meters tall 1200 meters out from the runway.

ATC stated 1.5 km out they notified the plane its glide slope was off.

Now when you take the time to being notified your glide path is off at 1.5 km to 1.2 km out you are hitting tree tops at 8 meters, this tells me someone in the tower was either having a few drinks of vodka or had another motive.

And that is what Putin has in mind...

This one was definately not pilot error.

President of Poland Killed in Plane Crash in Russia (Update)

MOSCOW — A plane carrying the Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, his wife and other high-ranking officials crashed in a heavy fog in western Russia on Saturday morning, killing all aboard, Polish officials said.

Given Poland was moving away from Russia's hold on natural gas and acting counter to Gazprom --- this crash has the feel of an accident by design -- ILS/DME out of calibration with poor weather observations.

Poland Seeks 23 Percent Tax on Natural Gas

If this pans out for Poland, it will help Poland out tremendously in becoming energy independent.

"...Mr Fanning pointed out that the Polish Government, which is keen to diversify its energy supplies from a reliance on Russia, has been strongly supportive of the programme. It is seeking a 23 per cent tax take. Rowen Bainbridge, the chief executive of Aurelian Oil and Gas, another British company exploring in Poland, said: “These are some of the best fiscal terms in the world. The Government is creating a very large commercial incentive to develop these deposits.”

Eddie Burke Throws A Wrench, His T-Shirt and his Political Hat into the Lt. Governor's Race

It's official now, Lt. Governor Craig Campbell has officially removed himself from the Republican Primary race for Lt. Governor while former radio talk show host and Red County contributor Eddie Burke has entered the race.

Because I had been speaking with Eddie about his decision to run and it was told to me that Lt. Governor Campbell would withdraw from the race, I waited until Lt. Governor Campbell officially made his announcement that he would withdraw from the race, before I would write this commentary.
