Obama's Waterloo: Iran

Iran is what will bring Obama down to where Hillary will be asked to run against him in 2012.

'Iran will deliver telling blow to global powers on Feb. 11'

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the nation will deliver a harsh blow to the "global arrogance" on this year's anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

"The Islamic Revolution opened a window to liberty for the human race, which was trapped in the dead ends of materialism," Ahmadinejad said during a cabinet meeting on Sunday.

"If the Islamic Revolution had not occurred, liberalism and Marxism would have crushed all human dignity in their power-seeking and money-grubbing claws. Nothing would have remained of human and spiritual principles," he added.

Ahmadinejad said that in the three decades of its history, the Islamic Revolution had inspired some great developments in the world.

The Iranian president made the remarks as the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution approaches.

Iranians are expected to pour into the streets on February 11 to celebrate the occasion in public rallies across the country, as they have done annually over the past three decades.

Just over half of Americans support a military attack on Iran by the United States and its allies if Teheran doesn't halt its nuclear program, according to a new poll by The Israel Project.

In such a scenario, 51% of Americans would support targeted military strikes and 44% would oppose them.

The percentages of Americans supporting strikes will go up and the Iranian issue will become a crisis.

The Iran issue will separate Hillary Clinton from Obama and this issue will catapult Clinton into a 2012 Democratic primary.

Russia free to sell weaponry to Iran: exporter

Russia free to sell weaponry to Iran: exporter

MOSCOW, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Moscow is free to sell weaponry to Tehran, the head of Russia's state arms exporter said on Thursday.

"Nothing prevents the continuation of military cooperation in those directions of interest to Russia and Iran," Anatoly Isaikin, director-general of Rosoboronexport, said at a press conference.

"No special rules are applied to Iran in arms selling...Iran has never violated a single commitment it has undertaken with regard to military contracts," he was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency and the Interfax news agency as saying.

Russia agreed to sell S-300PMU1 missile systems to Iran under a deal reached several years ago, but hasn't made the delivery yet.

The deal is worth some 800 million U.S. dollars, according to unofficial sources.

The S-300PMU1 multi-channel mobile air defense system is designed to intercept modern and projected aircraft, strategic cruise missiles, and other targets flying at up to 2,800 meters per second.

Israel has urged Russia not to deliver such systems to Iran, alleging Iran wants to develop a military nuclear program and such a deal will not serve the interests of peace in the Middle East.

Tehran insists its nuclear program is solely for civilian purposes.

Despite continuing its arms sale policy on Iran, recently Moscow has apparently moved closer to the West on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned Iran on Wednesday that "it's impossible to wait forever" and that Russia's partners "are already talking about the need to discuss further steps at the U.N. Security Council." Beside the Iranian deal, Isaikin also said at the press conference that with an export of military products totalling 7.4 billion U.S. dollars last year, Russia anticipated to sell at least a similar amount this year.

"We do not expect arms deliveries abroad in 2010 to be lower than in 2009," he said.

Rosoboronexport's contract portfolio for the near future currently exceeded 34 billion dollars, he added.

Senator Begich: Not a Very Popular Guy

McCain Approval Ratings in Tank; Lowest Levels Since Keating Five Scandal

For the first time since 1994 -- when he was recovering from the Keating Five scandal -- John McCain's approval rating has hit 40 percent.

A poll conducted by the Behavior Research Center determined the figure, but while McCain's numbers may be down, Arizona's senior U.S. senator is far from out.

Republicans, for the most part, still like McCain. The poll finds that within the Republican Party McCain still has a 52 percent approval rating, with only 14 percent of those polled saying he's doing a "poor" job.

Sarah Palin's Credibility Gap: Her Endorsement of Senator McCain

Here is what will bring Palin some trouble with her endorsement of McCain:

However, it was not J.D. Hayworth, nor Jack Abramoff at the crap table. It was Senator John McCain, campaign manager and Indian lobbyist in his own right, Rick Davis, along with Scott Reed, now the one remaining big time lobbyist handling the tribes and their money.

There is no way of logically endorsing a candidate who has McCain's past. Like I said before, we voted for Palin, not McCain.

She has created some serious problems for herself, by endorsing McCain.
Crist Proud to Meet President Obama at Airport

TAMPA (2009-12-28) - Gov. Charlie Crist made no apology for not attending President Obama’s town hall meeting Thursday at the University of Tampa, even though he was in town for the Board of Governors’ meeting at the University of South Florida.

The Republican governor took a lot of political heat for literally embracing President Obama and taking federal stimulus money last spring.

This time, Crist did not appear on stage with the President but he did greet his plane on the tarmac at MacDill Air Force Base.

“I was with him today, the only Republican to be with him and I was proud to be there because it was the right thing to do,” Crist said.

“It’s important for us to work together for the betterment of our people and I’ll do it every single day.”

Crist handed the president a letter making Florida’s case for the Race to the Top education grant and the need for more bipartisanship.

He also spoke to him about the high-speed rail grant.

Reps. pull out of Tea Party convention

Reps. pull out of Tea Party convention

Politico got a statement from Blackburn's office and it cited consultation with the House Committee on Standards: “After consulting with the Committee on Standards, Congressman Blackburn has decided not to participate in the Tea Party Nation Convention next week.” Standards advised Congressman Blackburn not to participate in the event due to uncertainty about how any proceeds from the event may be used. Convention organizers have not been clear about how those funds will be put to use. We have every indication that any profit could be put to work to advance grass roots causes and some of those uses could make the Congressman's participation improper after the fact.”

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune on Bachmann: "Bachmann's office cited the same concerns that other Tea Party activists have voiced about the first-of-its-kind national gathering: namely, the for-profit model of organizer Judson Phillips, a self-described 'small town lawyer' with a history of financial problems."

And Palin is still going over the comments of Bachmann?

Doug Ross has some advice...

Send McCain to retirement.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Michele Bachmann said today she is reconsidering her commitment to speak at the National Tea Party Convention in Nashville because of potential ethics concerns she said have been raised about members of Congress speaking at the event.

McChrystal focuses on peace with Taliban: report

LONDON — The NATO commander in Afghanistan said his troop surge could lead to a negotiated peace with the Taliban, in an interview published Monday ahead of a major conference this week on the war.

US General Stanley McChrystal also told the Financial Times he hopes his allies will leave Thursday's meeting in London with a "renewed commitment" to the increasingly bloody conflict.

Officials brace for 3rd wave of H1N1

The 41st person in Iowa has died from complications related to the H1N1 influenza while health officials await a "third wave" of infection that might not arrive until next year -- in a different guise.

"I still recommend people get vaccinated," said Dr. Patricia Quinlisk, medical director for the Iowa Department of Public Health. "I am asked, 'What if I get my vaccination and the third wave doesn't come.' It won't be a waste. A lot of the experts I have talked to say H1N1 will come back next year as seasonal flu. This virus will be around for a while."

Taliban kill seven US 'spies' in Pakistan: police

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan — Taliban militants shot dead seven men in Pakistan's restive northwest tribal belt after accusing them of spying for the United States, officials said Sunday.

The bullet-ridden bodies of five men were found on Sunday dumped by the side of a road in Kamsarobi village, 30 kilometres (18 miles) south of Miranshah, the main town in the semi-autonomous North Waziristan tribal region.

"Taliban killed five men overnight, accusing them of spying for Americans to help them launch drone attacks," local police official Mehboob Shah told AFP.

Once Again Tommy Reports from C4P has it Wrong on Alaska

This youngster needs some schooling again...

12,700: the preliminary forecast for employment levels as projected by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development for the oil and gas industry in 2009. If the forecast is correct, it would mark the highest level of industry employment in Alaska's history, even exceeding the previous high mark set in 2008.

He had better do an analysis on the report.

And then read the latest; the unemployment rate has gone up in Alaska. Moreover, the only thing that is keeping the employment at its current level in the oil industry is the work on maintaining the pipeline and keeping the damn thing from leaking and offshore exploration.

ACES had nothing to do with that.

Alaska's 8.8% unemployment rate is highest since 1992

JUNEAU -- Alaska's unemployment rate hit 8.8 percent last month, its highest level since September 1992. The rate was 6.8 percent in December 2008.

The state Labor Department cites several factors for the increase over the year, including job losses in the oil, construction, hospitality and leisure industries. It also attributes the rise in part to the growth in job seekers from other states coming to Alaska to find work.

The department says the state stayed below the national unemployment rate for 12 months, something it says hasn't happened since the early '80s, when the U.S. was going through a recession and Alaska was enjoying a boom.

The national unemployment rate in December was 10 percent.

McCain Muscle? J.D. Hayworth Leaves KFYI

link

There has been a lot of speculation if Hayworth would enter the race against McCain. As to date, Hayworth hasn't. There was no official statement to the fact.

A supporter to Hayworth has said:

Former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth gave up his talk radio show Friday, and a key political supporter says it's because Sen. John McCain muscled him off the air.

Hayworth has been considering a possible Republican primary challenge to McCain and now that he is off the air, he can enter the race without concern for his job. Earlier this week, Hayworth, a relentless McCain critic, said he no longer could discuss McCain's candidacy or the Senate race on his weekday afternoon KFYI (550 AM) program on the opinion of lawyers for station owner Clear Channel Communications.

(...)

In a KFYI appearance Thursday, Hayworth also referenced McCain's connection to the Commerce Committee and talked about an environment where cautious industry executives say, "Oh, let's not upset John McCain."

While McCain is a former Commerce Committee chairman, he has not sat on the panel for a year.

"Maybe Mr. Rose should get his facts straight before throwing around baseless and blatantly false character attacks," said Shiree Verdone, McCain's 2010 campaign manager. "This kind of character assassination is typical of Mr. Hayworth and Mr. Rose's negative campaigning in the past."

Regardless, Rose said station management clearly was concerned about McCain's "influence and power."

Smokey Rivers, Clear Channel's director of programming and operations in Phoenix, acknowledged Hayworth's on-air activities raised legal questions. He did not blame McCain.

"J.D. was living in an area that was somewhere between being a citizen and being a candidate, based on some of the actions and some of the words that he transmitted via the radio show," Rivers said. "I'm not certain if he's going to declare his candidacy or not, but I do know this: Now he's free of any shackles that he may have had via his radio show to go do as he pleases. This is something that J.D. and the radio station thought was best for each of us respectively."

If Hayworth does enter the race, he will have to make up for lost time. A Rasmussen Reports poll released Friday indicates he is trailing McCain among likely Republican voters by 22 percentage points, 53 percent to 31 percent. The poll, conducted Wednesday, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.. How this plays out with the voters in Arizona? We shall see.

If J.D. Hayworth does decide to run, then it puts Palin against the Tea Party and then it will become a battle between Palin and the grassroots effort.

The continued battle will result in Palin losing support...

GOP Still at Risk of "McCain Regression Syndrome"

By Michelle Malkin

Pay attention: In the afterglow of the Massachusetts Miracle, there are flickers of peril for the right. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but like Paul Revere’s midnight message, consider this warning “a cry of defiance, and not of fear.” Conservatives have worked hard to rebuild after Big Government Republican John McCain’s defeat. But McCain isn’t going gently into that good night.

Red Flag No. One: A reader from Arizona informed me the day after the Bay State Bombshell that he had received a robo-call from Massachusetts GOP Sen.-elect Scott Brown. “He basically wanted me to vote for John McCain in November,” the reader said in his description of the automated campaign call supporting the four-term Sen. McCain’s re-election bid. “No wonder [Brown] said he hadn't had any sleep. … He was busy recording phone messages!”

Red Flag No. Two: Also in the wake of the Massachusetts special election, the nation’s most popular conservative political figure Sarah Palin announced she would be campaigning for her former running mate in Arizona in March. Palin told Facebook followers that she’s going to “ride the tide with commonsense candidates” and help “heroes and statesmen” like McCain.

Facing mounting conservative opposition in his home state and polls showing him virtually tied with possible GOP challenger and former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, McCain welcomed the boost: "Sarah energized our nation and remains a leading voice in the Republican Party."

McCain-Feingold Falls

Just in time for Sarah Palin's endorsement....

Palin's Endorsement of McCain: Fool's Gold?

The political fall-out begins....

Sarah Palin, the conservative's sweetheart, will campaign for Sen. John McCain's re-election bid.

Could this be proof that she shares many - if not most - of McCain's political views?

During the 2008 elections, it was a foregone conclusion that Palin wasn't going to argue with her own running mate on several of his questionable, RINO-esque positions. The presidential and vice presidential candidates sharing a ticket shouldn't be sparring, afterall...

Palin is no longer tied to anyone. You'd think she'd leave McCain out in the field... But she's hasn't! And WHY hasn't she?

Doesn't this concern you? Or are you still rooting for Palin 2012?

If she were a REAL conservative looking to support someone out in Arizona, shouldn't she be pushing for J.D. Hayworth to run against McCain?

We know that Palin, for instance, steers away from commenting on her immigration stance. Could it be due to the fact that she supports amnesty? Or that she never did anything about the sanctuary cities in her own state of Alaska?

Don't get us wrong; Sarah Palin's great. She should act as an inspiration to all women.

But for now... Maybe it really is best that she stay out of the political world.

(Sorry, Sarah... Quitting your job as governor wasn't the wisest move...)

There is more....

Arizona Conservatives To Palin - "Stay Away"

Again today, TheSarahPalinBlog@GMail.Com mailbox was filled with still more emails from Republicans in Arizona who do not want Sarah Palin to come to their state in April and campaign for John McCain prior to the Republican primary.

I do want to say a couple of things. I have always liked and admired John McCain. But there are just so many emails that this sentiment cannot be ignored. Even if you argue that the email campaign is orchestrated by a few Tea Party and other Conservative group, the passion is real.

As for Sarah's decision, John McCain selected Sarah Palin to be his running mate and put her on the national stage. All that has happened for her since, Going Rogue, The Washington Speaker's Bureau, Fox News, is because of that selection. If only for the financial security of her children and grandchildren, Sarah Palin owes a great debt to John McCain. He gave her the shot at the big time. Also, John McCain and Sarah Palin seem to sincerely like each other. Do I believe they walk lock step on every issue? No. But I do believe Sarah Palin is a good loyal friend and NOT campaigning for John McCain would make her look worse.

Like I said to the kids like TommyReports at C4P, you are amatuers and do not have Palin's back...

It will only get worse for Palin if Hayworth enters the race...

Palin has not learned from her mistakes...

Lesson one for Palin, you are loyal to the cause and the voters, not politicians. If you wanted the V.P. spot because you felt you could fight for the cause then so be it.

But loyalty to a politican is wrong.

The U.S. Ambassador's response:

"There are many incorrect reports that this agreement is barely functioning, that supposedly there was only one flight of a US plane,"John Beyrle said in an interview with Echo of Moscow radio. "In fact there were five, and 11 more are planned."

Where have I heard similar comments like that before?

Rev. Wright: "Obama Says What He Has to Say as a Politician" and "He does what politicians do."

The above statement was made by a die-hard Palin supporter... The other statement was made by a die-hard Obama supporter...

See any difference?

Moreover, you have Sarah Barracuda who is a die-hard fan stating this:

Uh, I’m a supporter of hers and I’m not making excuses. I’m not happy with the decision. If I had been her, I would have stayed out of this race altogether. I can’t stand McCain, I want him gone in 2010..but if Hayworth does not run, isn’t McCain a shoe in no matter what

If McCain continues to hold onto a platform that is opposite to what is important to Alaskans, Palin will be viewed as holding her loyalty to McCain and not to Alaska...

Alaskans put Palin in the postion to be picked V.P. not McCain...

Since Palin has put her political life on the line for McCain, he needs to change his stances so that they are favorable to Alaska. Then Alaskans will feel that she has not abandoned issues important to Alaska.

If he doesn't, then he is not an honorable man.

Sarah Palin's Waterloo: John McCain

I have been critical of Sarah Palin's decision to endorse McCain and with good reason.

Palin should have held her endorsement unless McCain had made some heartfelt changes on his stances.

He hasn't and if he does, it won't be because of Palin, it will be because polls show Hayworth close and given what is happening with the Tea Party movement, McCain will move to the right because his political life will depend on it.

I have stated McCain will be Palin's Waterloo and if Hayworth enters the race, Palin will be done politcally.

There are those of her ardent supporters (c4p) who say they have her back and choose to not criticise her. They do Palin no service.

Here is why....

Sarah, THAT’s a big mistake!

John needs to retire and WE need J.D. Hayworth in there!

'It is to me a new and consolatory proof that wherever the people are well-informed they can be trusted with their own government; that whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights."

Today, the Alaska legislature is going back to the isolated capital city of Juneau, to work on the people’s business.

In 90 days running (with some legislators like Rep. Ramras taking three days off here and there), our elected officials will be crafting legislation that will protect us from using cell phones in cars to enacting the death penalty. And of course since oil prices are high, our legislators are looking at ways to spend the extra dough.

But within all of the hoopla on high oil prices and the state coffers full of dough, Governor Parnell and the legislature will be revisiting Sarah Palin’s legacy legislation; Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share (ACES).

The Eddie Burke Show: January 25th, 4:00 P.M.

This is a Public Service Announcement(sort of) for Eddie's show on January 25th, 2009 at 4:00 P.M.

Eddie will be having on his show, Phelim McAleer one of the two people who made the documentary "Not Evil Just Wrong".

I have not seen the documentary, but according to the U.A.A. College Republicans it is:

“Not Evil Just Wrong” is a new documentary by Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney dealing with the alarmist global warming claims championed by former Vice-President Al Gore. The movie proves the only threats to America (and the rest of the world) are the flawed science and sky-is-falling rhetoric of Al Gore and his allies in environmental extremism. This film also exposes the deceptions that “experts”, politicians, educators, and the mainstream media have been force-feeding the public for years.

The U.A.A. College Republicans will also be hosting an event showing the documentary with a Q and A with the film makers following the event.

According to the sponsors they have invited all sides (pro and con on the topic of global warming) to the event and ask questions.

Anchorage, AK-Jan. 07, 2010-The University of Alaska Anchorage College Republicans are hosting the “Not Evil Just Wrong” movie event, Tuesday, Jan.26. The event is taking place at the UAA Wendy Williamson Auditorium.

(...)

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film will start at 7:00 p.m. There will be an introduction before the film starts and a question and answer session after with the producers. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for general public.

For more information about this movie event please contact Ryan McKee at (907) 841-3274 (907) 841-3274 or Jeremiah Campbell at (814) 392-8123 (814) 392-8123.

How to Tell the Difference Between an Alaskan Who Thinks they Are Conservative and a Conservative Alaskan?

The one who thinks they are conservative will point to a stoner(s) as proof that they are right..

Romney being Linked with Brown?

This one will put some people on the edge...

From the start, Brown has been counseled by members of the Shawmut Group, a Boston-based consulting firm that acts as the Romney political brain trust in exile.

Note to the folks at SarahPac this is how you get er done:

As Tuesday’s vote nears, Team Romney’s role in the Brown campaign is tumbling into the open. Talking to The Washington Post, strategist Eric Fehrnstrom trumpeted his campaign’s use of an ad featuring John F. Kennedy, Jr. and called the Coakley camp’s ensuing silence the turning point in the campaign.

“One thing it does say about Mitt is that his folks know how to run a campaign,” Kaufman says.

SarahPac had their chance with Marco Rubio and they blew it... Rubio is charging along and Palin coming this late in the game in the Rubio race will seem like she is co-opting his success.

Sarah Palin keeps listening to the wrong people.

Fox Network Contributor Sarah Palin: How'd She Do?

Meanwhile the kids at C4P keep up the cheering that Palin is a "loyalist to McCain"...

Will Sarah Palin be Branded a Loyalist to McCain?

Protest march targets Arpaio tactics

A crowd estimated at as many as 10,000 marched in Phoenix Saturday, protesting Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's immigration sweeps.

The anti-Arpaio march protested around various county jail sites. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office closed its jails to visitors on Saturday because of the protests.

Protesters including Hispanic activists and various other critics of the Sheriff's office, who say the MCSO unfairly targets Hispanics in its raids.

Meanwhile --

you have this.

• McCain called Thursday's news conference to announce that eight county sheriffs from around Arizona have endorsed his re-election. One was conspicuously missing: Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a longtime political rival of McCain's who already has said he would support former congressman J.D. Hayworth over McCain in this year's Republican primary. Hayworth is considering an insurgent challenge.

(emphasis added)

The immigration issue is just one key issue with the Arizona Tea Party and given Simcox is in the race so far, the extreme faction within the political realm (i.e. Neo Nazis and other racist groups) have supported Simcox. And this support and association with Simcox has diminished Simcox's chances in a Republican only primary.

In the following video, you will see how the anti-illegal immigration movement has reacted to racist groups showing up at their rally.

As stated before, J.D. Hayworth has the support of the mainstream Tea Party members and with many conservatives within the Republican Party. And as pointed out, many of these people are becoming active by becoming precinct delegates within the Republican Party in Arizona.

If J.D. Hayworth does throw his hat in the ring, then you will see the Tea Party movement continue like you see in Massachusetts.

As I stated to some, Arizona will then become Palin's Waterloo in politics.

McCain may be offering his support to Palin, but it is being done because he knows that he is in trouble.

The Tea Party members in Arizona consider themselves to be patriots; how will they view Palin if she continues on with her endorsement of McCain even when he stands against many issues the Tea Party members view as important, that will be answered if J.D. Hayworth enters the race...

Can Senator Kirk Vote on the Health Care Bill

Once the special election has taken place?

According to this legal analysis, the answer is no.

My review of Senate precedent suggests the answer is no. A CRS report notes that “[p]revailing practice is for state governors to fill Senate vacancies by appointment, with the appointee serving until a special election has been held, at which time the appointment expires immediately.” This practice is in accordance with the Seventeenth Amendment, which provides that “the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.”

The Massachusetts law, passed in September to authorize Kirk’s appointment, provides that an appointed Senator shall serve “until the election and qualification of the person duly elected to fill the vacancy.” This would seem to support the position that Kirk can continue to serve after the special election is held. However, the Senate has previously found that substantially similar state laws cannot extend the term of an appointed Senator beyond the date of the special election.

On May 7, 1937, George Berry was given a temporary appointment as U.S. Senator from Tennessee to fill a vacancy created by the death of Senator Nathan Bachman. On November 8, 1938, a special election was held to fill the seat. In accordance with Tennessee’s normal practice, it took several weeks before the votes were counted and a winner was not certified until January 3, 1939. The applicable Tennessee law provided that a temporary Senator “shall hold office until his successor is elected at the next biennial election and qualifies.” Based on this law, Berry claimed that he was entitled to hold office and be paid until his successor was certified and/or actually seated by the Senate.

Berry’s claim was referred to a subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which held a hearing and considered legal arguments on the matter. A legal analysis prepared for the subcommittee found that “in view of [Seventeenth Amendment’s] purpose of providing for representation in the Senate by persons elected by popular vote both for full terms and for unexpired terms it seems reasonable to assume that no temporary appointment was to be authorized except for the intervening period between the creation of a vacancy and the day when the people by their votes actually elect a successor, or, in other words, until they elect a person to fill the vacancy.”

In addition to the text and purpose of the Seventeenth Amendment, the analysis relied on various Senate precedents, including an October 15, 1918 ruling by Vice President Marshall, who found that the phraseology of the amendment was “radically different” than that of various state laws that permitted appointees to serve until their successors were “elected and qualified.” Marshall concluded that regardless of the fact that Senators-elect must “run the gamit of executive, administrative, judicial and senatorial investigation before they are entitled to qualify and take their seats as Members of the United States Senate,” the terms of their appointed predecessors nonetheless expire on the day of election. While the Vice President noted that “[e]quitably, it would seem that the present incumbents ought to be permitted to hold until their successors elected on the 5th of November have been sworn in as Senators, [] such . . . is not the law.”

The Senate subcommittee and committee concluded, based on its hearing and review, that “the term of service of a Senator appointed to fill a vacancy in an unexpired term ends on the day when his successor is elected by the people.” 1939 Congressional Record, p. 998. There was evidently no controversy among either the subcommittee or full committee regarding this legal conclusion, and the committee then presented a resolution to the Senate for adoption, expressing the view that Berry’s term of service expired on November 8, 1938, the date of the special election. As Senator Connally, a member of the subcommittee, explained to the Senate, the fact that the Tennessee statute purported to extend Berry’s term until the qualification of his successor was of no force because the statute was “plainly in conflict with the provisions of the seventeenth amendment.” Accordingly, the Senate adopted the proposed resolution without dissent. 1939 Congressional Record, p. 1058.

Based on this authority, it would appear that a valid point of order could be raised as to Senator Kirk’s participation in Senate proceedings after January 19, 2010.

Conyers demands 'rigorous, thorough' probe of Dearborn imam's slaying by FBI

Conyers, a Democrat who serves as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to Holder today that also called for the Civil Rights Division to investigate whether the FBI has violated First Amendment freedoms by using undercover agents in mosques and other houses of worship.

Conyers cited reports that government informants visited and recorded statements at the mosque of Luqman Ameen Abdullah, who died in the shootout in Dearborn Oct. 28.

Makes you wonder why the destination of the underwear bomber was Detroit....

The Purge of the Republican Party is On!

By Dr. Richard Swier

I wrote a column about a meeting of the Republican Party of Sarasota (RPOS) last night. The meeting dealt with two resolutions brought to the floor for a vote by the RPOS Policy Committee. Both resolutions held the Sarasota County School Board and School Administration to task for out of control spending of non-recurring (school referendum) tax dollars on recurring expenses (district salaries and benefits), an unsustainable school district operational budget of $407 million and by passing voters on bonding for school construction projects.

What I witnessed last night was the beginnings of a purge of the Republican party at the local level. Who is behind this purge? Conservatives, TEA Party activists, 9/12ers or whatever you may want to call them!

The Start of a Revolution: Arizona and Nevada

When I was a kid growing up, my mother was deeply involved in politics and the Democratic Party.

The first time she had entered politics, she ran as a precinct delegate. And I remember my friends and I passing out her flyer to prospective voters.

The final count when it was said and done; my mother won against an opponent who was heavily endorsed by the union.

So when I read this article, I smiled....

The U.S. Tea Party movement is trying to take over the Republican Party precinct by precinct, party activists said.

The recently formed National Precinct Alliance aims to get Tea Partiers to become Republican precinct leaders, The New York Times reported. The alliance says it already has coordinators in most states and has increased the number of conservative Republican committee members in Nevada and Arizona.

That is how the Democrats have done it for years.... It starts with the precinct delegates....

Josh Painter: Building His Field of Dreams

I recieved an e-mail from contributor Josh Painter asking me to remove him and I noticed he removed me from contributing on his site.

I know how strongly Josh feels about Palin but there is another side to all of this.

Some bloggers who have a passion about Palin and don't criticize her seem to have two reasons behind their motivation.

Loyalty and recognition.

To paraphrase a scene from a Field of Dreams and to address the latter reason, Josh, who are you doing it for?

You are a better man than that.

World Net Daily's Ilana Mercer: Smacking Down Sarah Palin?

First, there was the CPAC issue with Sarah Palin and the scorn that followed. Now you now have this from World Net Daily...

Sarah Palin is in the news for a change, not for the most significant thing she has done of late, but for the least significant. Scrap that: Joining the Fox News lineup of analysts is hardly inconsequential, although it is a bad move.

(...)

I had sincerely hoped that Sarah Palin had come to realize that reviving the rigor-riddled Republican Party would be like trying to breathe life into a corpse. Neither possible, nor desirable.

The CPAC snub, coupled with Palin's endorsement, last year, of the Conservative Party's Doug Hoffman for the 23rd Congressional District of New York, made it look like she was indeed galloping away from the "GOP, RIP."

To the kids at C4P, have fun with this one. Isn't WND attending the same function Palin is attending?

Sold out! Palin-Farah ticket rocks tea-party convention

Makes me want to ask, Where is Obama's COB ...... I'm sure the kids at C4P will have an answer.

God help Palin if McCain gets a Tea Party supported opponent in Arizona.....

Memo to Fox Network Contributor Sarah Palin: Beck to be CPAC closing speaker

Beck to be CPAC closing speaker

"CPAC is my kind of people," Beck said on the radio this morning. "CPAC is, I think they're as angry at the Republicans as I am."

Since starting at Fox in early 2009, Beck's profile has only continued to grow (along with his ratings and book sales). Over the year, he took an active role in promoting tea party rallies and calling attention to figures in the Obama administration, such as Van Jones. It was enough to land on the cover of Time.

In September, I looked at whether Beck had overtaken Rush Limbaugh as the leading conservative voice in the media. Incidentally, Limbaugh closed CPAC last year.

Beck said he's "humbled" to be taking the podium the year after Limbaugh, and addressing an audience in the keynote slot that went to Ronald Reagan in the 1980's.

Fox Network Contributor Sarah Palin had me at "Crap"

I finally had the chance to see Sarah Palin on the Fox network with Bill O’Reilly.

And as a Fox network media figure, she had me at the word "crap".

However, for myself, she has now become less of a political figure. And as time moves on, the question will be asked; will she have a chance at a presidential bid in 2012?

I don't believe she will have a strong resume to run, other than being a successful Fox network contributor and public speaker to carry her in a presidential bid.

While resigning was the right thing for her to do, the act of resigning does not give her the opportunity to correct problems with Alaska legislation that was pushed by her and signed by her.

The Alaska Polar Bear: An Evolution in Disguise

Before there were fossil fuels, automobiles and environmentalists exhaling poisonous C02 gas, there is an interesting phenomenon that took place on earth and according to some scientist, it is called evolution.

I like to think of evolution as an intelligent design.

After-all, how can a natural act like evolution, produce such an intelligently designed species as the Alaska polar bear. And then to understand the complexities in the evolutionary process of the Alaska polar bear, it requires intelligence to understand the complexities.

Steve Schmidt: Instead of Incompetence, Bring Your Best Game Next Time

Mr. Schmidt, the architect behind the McCain defeat, has come out on 60 minutes stating Palin lied about Todd Palin being a member with the Alaska Independence Party.

Mr. Schmidt, puts his spin on the Alaska Independence Party situation that was addressed earlier.

Palin blasted out an e-mail with the subject line "Todd" to Schmidt, campaign manager Rick Davis and senior advisor Nicolle Wallace, copying her husband on the message (all of the e-mails are reprinted below as written).

"Pls get in front of that ridiculous issue that's cropped up all day today - two reporters, a protestor's sign, and many shout-outs all claiming Todd's involvement in an anti-American political party," Palin wrote. "It's bull, and I don't want to have to keep reacting to it ... Pls have statement given on this so it's put to bed."

Her reference to a single protestor's sign and "many shout-outs" was indicative of Palin's occasional tendency to take anecdotal evidence of a minor problem and extrapolate it into something far more menacing. The final of the three presidential debates was just hours away, which would mark the unveiling of the soon-to-be canonized Joe The Plumber.

As an aside to this, CBS puts their own spin on the story when they characterize Palin's concern to a "single protestor's sign and many shout-outs was indicative of Palin's occasional tendency to take anecdotal evidence of a minor problem and extrapolate it into something far menacing" is laughable when you can do a google search on Todd Palin and the AIP and come up with this.

Results 1 - 10 of about 220,000 for todd palin aip. (0.27 seconds)

But back to the rest of Schmidt's story.

Schmidt hit "reply to all" less than five minutes after Palin's e-mail was sent. "Ignore it," he wrote. "He was a member of the aip? My understanding is yes. That is part of their platform. Do not engage the protestors. If a reporter asks say it is ridiculous. Todd loves america."

This clear cut response from the campaign's top dog carried an air of finality, but it did not satisfy Palin. She responded with another e-mail, adding five more names to the "cc" box, all of whom traveled on her campaign plane. They included her senior political adviser Tucker Eskew, senior aide Jason Recher, the lone traveling aide from her Alaska office Kris Perry, press secretary Tracey Schmitt and personal assistant Bexie Nobles.

(...)

Palin's insertion of the five additional staffers in the e-mail chain was an apparent attempt to rally her own troops in the face of a decision from the commanding general with which she disagreed. Her inclusion of her personal assistant was particularly telling about her quest for affirmation and support in numbers, since the young staffer was not in a position to have any input on campaign strategy.

"That's not part of their platform and he was only a 'member' bc independent alaskans too often check that 'Alaska Independent' box on voter registrations thinking it just means non partisan," Palin wrote. "He caught his error when changing our address and checked the right box. I still want it fixed."

(emphasis added)

As you can see in the emphasized portion, Palin acknowledged he was a member.

The question: is what Palin said about Todd making a mistake about signing the wrong box true? Who knows...

And most definitely, from what is available from the released e-mails, Palin never said he was not a member like Schmidt tries to lead the T.V. audience to believe.

But on the flip-side, if what Schmidt told Palin to say is true, then it was appropriate. Palin should have followed his advice and left it.

Palin's actions made it seem that there was something wrong with the AIP and risked putting many fine members of the AIP in a bad light.

Moreover, when it comes to Schmidt, you have to question Schmidt's handling of the controversy over Trigg.

Lumped into this description of smearing are any questions about her experience, her time as mayor or governor in Alaska, her relationship to the Alaskan Independence Party -- which her husband Todd was a member of, and any other issues in which you might be interested.

Obviously, they want to rally voters behind her. But are they doing Palin a service?

"Members of this campaign went to off-the-record lunches with reporters today," Schmidt told Katie Couric, Tuesday, according to Politico, "and they were asked if she would do paternity tests to prove paternity for her last child. Smear after smear after smear, and it's disgraceful and it's wrong. And the American people are going to reject it overwhelmingly when they see her."

First, that's an intriguing definition of off-the-record, but second, what a reporter asks is not the same thing as what a reporter reports. It could be argued that Schmidt, raising the notion of paternity on national TV, did far more to spread that unpleasantness to millions of voters than anything anyone in the mainstream media did.

Some of the tactics the McCain campaign is using could certainly be seen as spreading rumors in the name of fighting them.

When it comes to so called experienced staffers, Steve Schmidt was not too bright on handling a simple matter.

Instead, he let it get out of control.....

Because like Schmidt, Nicolle Wallace told a big lie when it came to the issue of Katie Couric.

Palin needs to dump her endorsement of McCain.... He hasn't endorsed her and she doesn't owe McCain anything...

Moreover, her latest gaffe with CPAC, shows she still has advisers who don't have the smarts....

Is J.D. Hayworth Testing the Arizona Waters?

There has been much speculation on J.D. Hayworth and if he will run against John McCain.

In the latest, you have:

Former Rep. J. D. Hayworth has put this once-sleepy race on the map. Hayworth, a bull-headed conservative, has been making noises about challenging John McCain in the Republican primary, recently saying that he's "testing the waters" for a potential bid. Even though the allegedly Mavericky McCain pretty much dropped all pretense of having anything in common with Democrats once he began his presidential run, somehow he's still mistrusted by the right. When the tribe speaks, it may well be McCain who gets voted off the island.

Sadly, Democrats don't really have anyone who could capitalize on a potential Hayworth coup. The only announced candidate is one Rudy Garcia, former mayor of the town of Bell Gardens (pop. 45,000). Not so helpfully, Bell Gardens is in California. This race seems ripe for a young up-and-comer looking to raise his or her profile - no one will blame you for losing to John McCain, and hey, you might get a chance to take on Hayworth instead. Tucson City Councilman Rodney Glassman, who has formed an exploratory committee, might fit the bill. It'll be a while yet before we know if Team Blue can make any waves here, though. (D)

The John Birch Society and Tim Pawlenty

Eric Black from the Minnesota Post has his take on Tim Pawlenty attending CPAC and the JBS being a minor sponsor to CPAC.

Among the co-sponsors of the conference one finds a name one hasn't heard much since the mid-20th century — the John Birch Society. As a refugee from that century, I can tell you that when your mom and I were kids the "Birchers" (I use the term I grew up using and mean no offense by it) were a leading symbol of right-wing extremism.

So this is an obvious set-up to play the always popular "dissociate yourself" card. Under the rules of that card game, everyone involved in CPAC (including Pawlenty, as a speaker) has to repudiate the Birchers or be tainted by association with the most extreme thing the group ever said or did. It's fun and easy to play (see Barack Obama and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright) but also stupid and demeaning (ibid). A letter-writer to the Strib played the card early this week, asserting that Pawlenty's attendance would amount to an endorsement of Bircher views.

Hmmmm, now who do you think will be playing the "dissociate yourself" card....

So, back to the present. If Tim Pawlenty wants to be president, he certainly must say what he thinks the U.S. relationship to the U.N. should be, but he doesn't have to start from any particular that he agrees with the long-standing JBS position just because he spoke at a conference co-sponsored by the JBS.

Lisa DePasquale, CPAC director, told me Thursday that the conference will have 90-some cosponsors. To become a co-sponsor, she said, all an organization has to do is agree with the core principles of the American Conservative Union Foundation, outlined in a series of articles on its website, and buy an ad in the Conference's program. Co-sponsorship gets you an exhibition booth in the hall and the right to participate in meetings to plan the event. The JBS has not been a co-sponsor of previous CPACs, but DePasquale said they met the crieria, they "seem to be on our side," and she didn't think they should be shunned over things they said and did 50 years ago. "Most of the people on both sides of those arguments are dead," she added.

She agreed with me that wasn't reasonable to assume that Pawlenty's participation as a speaker implied any agreement with JBS's explicit positions, part or present. "If every speaker had to agree with every position of every co-sponsor, we wouldn't have very many co-sponsors," she said.

Of course, Pawlenty is no more implicated in JBS's beliefs than any of the many other speakers, which includes other leading undeclared presidential candidates such as Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. Mike Huckabee was scheduled but has canceled. Sarah Palin was invited but has declined. The current list of speakers, co-sponsors and exhibitors is available here.

Money Can't Buy you Love: CIA Bomber in Video With Taliban Leader

CIA Bomber in Video With Taliban Leader

(CBS/AP) A Jordanian doctor-turned-suicide bomber and triple agent who killed 7 CIA agents and a Jordanian intelligence agent in Afghanistan on December 30, appeared in a video broadcast by a Pakistani TV station on Saturday, meeting with Pakistan's main Taliban leader, and provoking widespread reaction over his ties with militants on both sides of the Pak-Afghan border.

The video showed Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi, the 32-year-old Jordanian doctor - reportedly a spy recruited by the CIA Jordan's intelligence services and Taliban militants - sitting besides Hakimullah Mehsud, leader of Pakistan's Taliban militants, reports CBS News' Farhan Bokhari.

The privately-owned AAJ TV channel said of al-Balawi that "Jordanian and American intelligence had offered him millions of dollars in exchange for spying on the mujahideen (holy warriors). But he rejected wealth and joined the mujahideen."

The channel said he had "shared all his secrets of Jordan and American intelligence" with his fellow militants.

Will the Real John McCain Stand Up?

It is getting real old hearing from John McCain pump himself up in T.V. ads.

“President Obama is leading an extreme left-wing crusade to bankrupt America. I stand in his way every day,” McCain states in one ad. In the other, an announcer intones: “John McCain is leading the fight against President Obama every day.”

What fight would that be? And on what day?

How about the fight on opening ANWR?

He's a federalist and feels the states should decide? Sure thing McCain.

Nice to know McCain and Obama both oppose drilling in ANWR and the State of Alaska has no choice in the matter.

How about fighting Obama on closing Gitmo?

Nice try for the tough guy. It's pretty hard trying to pick a fight with someone McCain agrees with.

How about waterboarding?

Maybe McCain is too afraid to take on Dick Cheney, who was right on the matter?

How about the fight against Obama on the cap and trade legislation?

McCain can try to spin that he has fought Obama on the legislation, but the fact remains, he got the ball rolling on the topic of climate change.

Now, to give McCain credit, he did show some fight on the stimulus package.

And at first, did McCain fight Obama on Afghanistan?

No, he actually picked up Obama's lead on focusing on Afghanistan instead of Iraq.

Interestingly as an aside, while Maddow uses this to poke McCain's eye out on Afghanistan, she was leading the charge against sending more troops into Afghanistan.

Figure that one out. And then there was the trip McCain and Lieberman took to Afghanistan so they could come back and report to Obama.

It wasn't until the delay in Obama's decision on Afghanistan did, McCain "really fight" Obama on the issue of Afghanistan.

Watch CBS News Videos Online

And then, once Obama made his decision on sending 30,000 troops to Afghanistan, what did McCain say?

Senator John McCain said Tuesday that President Obama made the "right choice" in sending 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, but warned that setting a withdrawal timetable sends the wrong message to U.S. allies and enemies.

"I think this policy can succeed . . . and I think it deserves robust public support, both from Democrats and Republicans," the Arizona senator said in a speech to the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation.

And what did Maddow think about Obama's decision, the one she talked about when poking McCain's eye out?

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

On the topic of Afghanistan, it seems Maddow is picking more of a fight with Obama than what McCain has done.

So with all of this, the question has to be asked, will the real John McCain standup?

Is There a Double Standard With Sarah Palin?

There comes a time when you have to ask yourself; are you going to be loyal to an issue or are you going to be loyal to the person?

And for Sarah Palin, that time has come.

She needs to decide if she is going to be loyal to the issues important to conservatives in Alaska and the nation, or is she going to be loyal to the person: John McCain.

Some background.

When John McCain won the presidential primary, my first comments on the Anchorage Daily News political blog was a word of warning: Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney would be smart to avoid running as V.P. with McCain.

It is not shaping up to be a pretty week for the Democrats.

And now word from Colorado that the first term Democratic governor there is shying away from facing voters again in November.

In their latest screed, they still continue to try and diminish the fact that the Tea Party movement has more support than the Republicans and Democrats...

How are Those Sanctions Working out Against Iran?

China's U.N. ambassador on Tuesday made clear that Beijing was not ready to immediately support new sanctions against Iran, as called for by Western powers, saying the issue needed "more time and patience."

"This is not the right time or right moment for sanctions because the diplomatic efforts are still going on," China's U.N. Ambassador Zhang Yesui told reporters through an interpreter.

Under the Obama administration and a Democrat majority in the House and Senate, the federal government's grip on the personal lives of people in Alaska, will be tightened through environmental policies that will hinder resource development on federal lands and will reduce Medicare/Medicaid payments and care through the eventual passage of Obamacare.

Unfortunately, until 2014, we Alaskans will be left to the will of Alaska's U.S. Senator Mark Begich, when it comes to siding with the current majority of Democratic Senators.
