There is a tragic irony in a poem written by William Ross Wallace that praises motherhood while not recognizing the dark-side of mothers who choose to drink or use illicit drugs while they are pregnant.
And because of the pro-choice movement and court interpretations with regard to the right to privacy, this dark-side of a mother’s behavior is enabled.
What sense is there in a law or opinion that makes it legal for a mother to drink while pregnant, while we have created laws that protect the public from those who drink and drive?
The end results in both cases can be tragic.
